Welcome to Society for Empowerment, Education & Development (SEED)

The Society for Empowerment, Education and Development (SEED) is a non-government, non-profit, non-political, voluntary and charitable organisation. Over the years, SEED has emerged as a large, independent, and credible research organization in the health and population sector in Bangladesh.

The scope of SEED’s work focuses in four areas: (1) quality health care to the poor; (2) capacity development; (3) technical assistance; and (4) research and development. Health remains an integral component of SEED’s activities, especially for women and the poor. Over the years, SEED’s health programmes have evolved in line with the national health priorities and changing health needs. Starting from small scale health project, SEED has established a large health and development programme to fight TB, STI, HIV/AIDS, Reproductive Health (including FP) and other common illnesses. SEED has forged successful partnerships with the government, WHO (TB/HIV and Anti-Tobacco), NGOs, including BRAC, and Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) in implementing different health programmes such as PPP in TB and STI, and tobacco control. In addition to this, SEED is now actively collaborating with the Government of Bangladesh to develop innovative programmes to improve the effectiveness of community-based health facilities and services on TB/HIV and NCDs. SEED’s health interventions are delivered through its own programmes, and through partnerships with the government and NGOs. Our TB/HIV and NCD programmes currently target four urban areas in Dhaka and 5 rural districts. Moreover, the PPP in TB control model has already been scaled up in two other major cities: Chittagong and Sylhet. Alongside health service provision, SEED has a strong research component, aimed at generating new knowledge to improve health of poorer communities in both urban and rural areas. Much of its research is embedded in the national programmes and its value is assessed in terms of contribution to changes in policy and practice. Moreover, SEED has been working with the NTP and partner NGOs, to implement training and capacity development programmes for TB, STI and tobacco control. SEED conducts training programmes for healthcare professionals from the government sector, NGOs, and other corporate organisations.

In the future, SEED'S plan is to work closely with the national programmes to apply and scale-up the PPP model to engage private sector providers in TB-HIV, Child TB, MDR-TB, and family planning. Intensive advocacy, communication and social mobilisation (ACSM) activities will be conducted to increase awareness regarding TB, TB-HIV, STI, and to reduce harm from second-hand smoking.
